Get a taste for mountain air at Tyrol's highest golf course

Tee off in the midst of summit worlds

A golf course at 1,340 metres above sea level is certainly something special. This is appreciated not only by the locals, but also by enthusiastic guests such as Laura Ardessi from Italy.

golf course in St. Anton am Arlberg

St. Anton is simply beautiful, perfectly organised, child-friendly, safe, diverse, and the people are very friendly - in other words, offers everything you need for a successful holiday,“ says the Italian. The Ardessis have been coming to the Arlberg for a few weeks in winter and up to two months in summer for the past 20 years: ”We've been members of the Golf Club ever since it was established, and we play every day when we're here in summer!“

Around 200 members and visiting guests take advantage of the idyllically situated 9-hole golf course in the Nasserein district - including 50 youth members, who play for free up to the age of 16 and at a reduced rate up to the age of 27. The affiliated golf school offers courses for beginners and professionals. A golf licence is a prerequisite for using the course.

A course with special requirements

”As our course is located directly on the ski slope, it is steeper and hillier in parts than other courses. And although the course is relatively short, the greens must be played first in order to score at all,“ says Werner Flunger, President of the Golf Club Arlberg extern, explaining the special features of the course. The club is also known for its traditional, almost weekly tournaments organised by hotels and institutions, during which participants are also treated to fabulous food. There is a drinks bar on ”normal“ days, but there is no shortage of options for fine dining in the surrounding Arlberg otherwise.

Interview - Jeffrey Swanson Golf Pro, Arlberg Golf School

In your opinion, what makes St. Anton am Arlberg golf course so unique?

Our charming clubhouse, the nice members, great tournaments and super greens. The course, however, also has its quirky challenges ...

Where are these challenges?
On seven par 3s, you must first land on the greens. It is a highlight to play with 3 or 4 on hole 3, par 4. At hole 8, par 4, you also have to play up into the ”Eagles Nest“.

What are the differences compared to other (e.g. lower lying) golf courses?

The balls fly further. You don't have to do any extra training for that, just enjoy the fact.

Your favourite hole?

Our ”signature hole“ is the par 3, hole 6. Ladies and men play 135 metres downhill over water onto a larger green. Hole 4 is also special in terms of the tee shot: it is played downhill from a platform in the forest above the centre of St. Anton am Arlberg.
